No. 25 Arizona Sweeps Santa Clara, 3-0
Sept. 10, 2009
SANTA CLARA – No. 25 Arizona used stellar play by senior Jacy Norton and support from outside hitters Dana Hutchinson and Tiffany Owens to sweep host Santa Clara in the Santa Clara Invitational Thursday night, 3-0. Set scores were 25-23, 25-15 and 25-19.
The Wildcats tallied 42 total kills and had a hitting percentage of .305 to improve its record to 7-0. Arizona’s two road wins matches its season road win total from 2008.
“The match came down to serving and passing and we were able to outperform them tonight,” said head coach Dave Rubio. “It feels nice to be able to defeat these guys (Santa Clara) after suffering some tough losses to them the past couple years.”
The win marks victory No. 450 for Rubio in his 24-year coaching tenure.
After playing a close first game, Arizona established itself over the second set, winning 25-15 with Hutchinson registering five of her eight total kills in the set.
Norton, who led the Cats with 10 kills and five blocks, had a hitting percentage of .538 and was easily the most dominant player for Arizona. Also having a big hand in the win was senior libero Alanna Resch.
“I really liked what Alanna gave us tonight,” added Rubio. “She was a big boost.”
Next up Arizona will take on Utah (5-2) at 7 p.m. tomorrow night in the Leavey Center at Santa Clara.
