Huskies Drop 1-0 Heartbreaker To Miami
Sept. 11, 2009
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Washington women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought match against Miami on Friday in the Nike Portland Invitational, falling 1-0 on a goal in the 83rd minute.
The loss drops the Huskies to 3-2-0 on the season while Miami, an NCAA Tournament team a year ago, improves to 4-2-0.
The Huskies out-shot the Hurricanes 15-11 in the match, led by six shots from senior Veronica Perez, but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Miami goalkeeper Vikki Alonzo made nine saves to keep the Huskies off the board. Alonzo is one of the top young goalkeepers in the nation, having broken the school-record for shutouts last season en route to being named a Freshman All-American.
UW sophomore goalkeeper Kari Davidson also played valiantly in the losing effort, tying her career high with six saves.
'We definitely had enough opportunities to score in that game and played well enough to win but we had some huge missed opportunities,' Washington head coach Lesle Gallimore said. 'Kari made an unbelievable breakaway save in the first half and she made two great saves right before the goal but we couldn't clear it far enough for her the second time and (Ashlee Burt) just hammered it. Credit Miami, they played well, but we had tons of opportunities and were in control for a lot of the game. We need to figure out how to turn these close games into wins.'
After a scoreless first half, in which the Huskies out-shot Miami, 7-4, the teams continued to slug it out in the second half. But it was Miami that finally struck in the 83rd minute when Ashlee Burt took a pass from Brittney Steinbruch, last year's ACC Freshman of the Year, at the top of the box and fired a shot from 18 yards out into the lower right corner.
The Huskies continue play in the Nike Portland Invitational on Sunday when they play No. 11 Illinois at Noon.
