Spokane, Wash. - The Oregon State men's soccer team defeated the Detroit Mercy Titans 2-1 Friday afternoon at the Gonzaga/Nike Soccer Classic in Spokane, Wash.

'We're pleased with the result because a win is a win, especially away from home,' head coach Steve Simmons said following the match.

The Beavers (3-0-1) got on the board early in the first half when in the fourth minute of the game when junior Brian Ramsey passed the ball through traffic to the left side of the field to sophomore Colin Mitchell who beat the keeper in a one-on-one situation with a low shot. It was Mitchell's third goal and Ramsey's second assist of the season.

It did not take long for Oregon State to increase their lead when, in the 11th minute, sophomore Danny Mwanga dribbled deep into Titan territory, cut across the baseline, and found the far side of the net for his third goal of the season and gave Oregon State the 2-0 lead.

The game turned into a defensive struggle for the final 79 minutes. The Beavers strong defensive line led by senior Justin Woodward held the Titans (1-2-0) to only six total shots, one of which was on goal.

'Our back line and our goal keeping have been pretty good,' Simmons said. 'There are still some things that need to be addressed and it's a matter of every time we step on the field we're taking lessons from the previous game to make us better.'

Sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Spangler recorded his second shutout of the season and has only allowed 2 goals in 370 minutes played this season. He has a goal average of 0.49.

The Beavers next hit the pitch in the third match of the Gonzaga/Nike Soccer Classic when they take on Eagles of Southern Georgia Sunday, Sept. 13 at 10:30am.
