No. 15 USC Records 3-0 Sweep Over Idaho State In Utah
Sept. 11, 2009
OREM, Utah -- Junior outside hitter Geena Urango (Los Alamitos/Los Alamitos HS) recorded a season-high 17 kills Friday as the No. 15 USC Women of Troy swept the Idaho State Bengals, 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-19). Urango hit .469 in the match (17-2-32) with four digs as USC improved to 7-1 on the season.
Emily Waldron led the Bengals (4-4) with 12 kills and 10 digs while hitting .385 (12-2-26).
Jupiter's kill snapped a 9-9 tie in the first set. USC kept the lead around three or four points and used an ace from Urango for the 21-17 lead. Audrey Eichler gave set point to the Trojans and an Idaho State attack error gave USC the 1-0 lead. It was a close one in the second set as a triple block on Lauren Williams gave Idaho State a 23-22 lead. Urango came back to tie it with a kill and Hillgren provided a key service ace for set point. Jaclyn Hone's attack error gave the Trojans the 2-0 lead.
In the final set, USC used an 11-7 run for the 17-11 score as ISU burned its final timeout. The Bengals got to within four, but it was three final kills by Urango that put the match away for the Trojans.
USC faces host Utah Valley tonight in a 7 p.m. Mountain time. Both teams will play again tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Notes: Urango missed her career high of 21 kills, set on Oct. 26, 2007, against California...since a five-set loss to Michigan State in the season opener, USC has recorded seven straight 3-0 sweeps including two over Top 25 opponents.
