USC To Run At UC Irvine Invitational Saturday
Sept. 11, 2009
USC has seven runners entered to compete at the UC Irvine Invitational in Irvine, Calif. on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 9 a.m. Last week the Trojans placed fourth at the CS Fullerton Invitational running five freshman and one junior. This weekend, senior captain Bridget Helgerson, senior Katherine Ellis, sophomore Leah Gaeta and junior transfer Christine Cortez will be running for the first time this season.
The UC Irvine Invitational is a 5K meet which will feature top-notch competition including Biola, Northern Colorado, UC San Diego, Pepperdine, Fresno State, CS Northridge, Cal Poly, Chico State, CS San Marcos and host UC Irvine.
'It looks like four schools will be battling for the top spots - Pepperdine, UC Irvine, CS San Marcos and USC,' said USC cross country coach Tom Walsh. 'Even though we don't have our top two runners competing, I'm looking for a good showing from our veterans, especially Bridget, Kat and Leah to step up, pick up the slack and lead us to a top three finish.'
The Women of Troy is battling the injury bug as several runners are being forced out of action for this meet. USC's top runner Zsofia Erdelyi will be held out of this meet as she recovers from plantar fasciitis, but has begun training again and is expected to be back in time for the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 26. Shea Wickland, another one of USC's projected top runners, has a sore knee and will also be held out of the meet. USC's top finisher last weekend freshman Christy Ambrosini has been battling back and hip injuries and will not run in the race.
'This meet will help us determine who will be on our travel squad for the Stanford meet in two weeks, so the girls are fired up and I look forward to seeing how they compete,' added Walsh.
