Viva Las Vegas: Day One

Sept. 11, 2009

Viva Las Vegas!

The Oregon State volleyball team is in Las Vegas, arriving Thursday evening. Soon the football team will also be in the same city on Friday. Saturday has been dubbed 'Beat the Beavers Day' by the UNLV Athletic Department, but both volleyball and football hope to leave Vegas speechless with a pair of wins.

The flight down to Vegas was packed, asking for volunteers to give up their seats. Not only packed, but it was full of Oregon State fans. Around the airport and plane, you could hear people finalizing their last minute plans and talking about how excited they were to get there. Many 'good luck' wishes were extended to the volleyball team. Even the flight attendants called the team's flight the 'Beavers Express.'

But the flight wasn't too full for senior Brittney Belshe's 'lucky' jumping beans. Only a pair has survived, but regardless, the survivors were on board.

While most trips the team stands out. For once, it blended in the sea of orange that seemed to go everywhere it went. But will that sea be making its way to the UNLV campus for the volleyball team's two matches?

A message the team is trying to get out to those visiting Vegas - Beaver football fans, volleyball is here, too. Come watch the team on Friday at 6:00 p.m. against UC Santa Barbara and Saturday before the football game at 3:30 p.m. against UNLV at Cox Pavilion on the east side of campus. Senior Camilla Ah-Hoy even sent a video message via Beaver Nation Online, urging fans to come check the team out.

Morning meetings, practice, pre-game and mental preparation are what the Oregon State volleyball team has been partaking in so far today. Game time is quickly approaching, and the team is ready to face the Gauchos.

The nine veterans are used to traveling throughout the season, even to places where the football team is playing the same weekend, but for the six newcomers, it's a different experience. Freshman defensive specialist Alyssa O'Neil was the first rookie to sit down to talk about how the opening couple of weeks and traveling has been.

This trip compared to our first trip is completely different for me. Being a freshman, I had no clue what to expect when it came time for our first trip. But now having had a few tournaments under my belt, I feel ready and excited, compared to being nervous and clueless. We started out the morning with an early practice to make sure that we were in a good place mentally and physically before the tournament. We had our usual bus ride to the airport, but then things became a little crazier. Upon entering the airport we all caught a glimpse of a line which looked longer than any of us had seen before. We luckily were able to avoid the large mass of people, but we were still curious to why the large amount of security. We later learned from an airport employee that somebody had gotten into the airport that wasn't supposed to and the security people were all searching for them. It provided us with something to talk about as we all enjoyed our overpriced airport food. Our flight to Vegas was full of Beaver fans, making it an exciting and noisy flight. While standing near the doors of the airport, waiting for the vans to get there, we met a man who claimed he loved women's volleyballs. His embarrassed friend and he provided us entertainment with his awkward comments while waiting for the vans. We all arrived to the hotel safe and sound, despite having a slight problem with the snacks but in the end all was well. And Britt has brought the magic jumping beans again on the trip, and hopefully they will bring us the luck we need to have a great tournament!
