Volleyball Defeats Cal State Northridge 3-1

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State volleyball team remained undefeated with a 25-16, 20-25, 25-19, 25-21 win over Cal State Northridge Friday afternoon in the opening match of the Nike Cougar Challenge tournament in Bohler Gym. Washington State takes on Idaho (4-2) in the 7:30 p.m. match Friday night.
Washington State (8-0) was led by the 16 kills, .464 hitting percentage and four blocks of senior Cassie Robbins. Sophomore Meagan Ganzer added 14 kills and freshman Oceana Bush had a match-high 24 digs. Senior setter Renee Bordelon had 47 assists.
Cal State Northridge (2-5) was led by Angela Hupp's 14 kills while Britney Graff and Brittany Williams each added another 12 kills. Graff led the team with 15 digs as five Matador players reached double-figure digs. Sam Orlandini had 41 assists. Tela Burnett and Lynda Morales both contributed four blocks.
WSU hit .236 for the match and CSUN hit .145.
WSU's Robbins had six kills (.667) in the first set to lead the Cougars to a 25-16 win. The Matadors kept the score close in the first half of the set but the home-team pulled away and stayed in control of the second half. WSU hit .306 as a team and held CSUN to a .077 hitting percentage.
Northridge raced out to a 12-5 lead in the second set and extended it to a 21-14. Washington State never found a rhythm on the court and fell 25-20. Hupp led the Matadors with five kills in the set. CSUN hit .294 in this set and held WSU to a .206 percentage.
The Cougars jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third set and held on to reach the 25-19 win. Ganzer and Todorovich each had four kills and Bush added seven digs for WSU while Graf and Williams each had five kills for the visitors in this set
Washington State carried the momentum from the third set into the four set and took a commanding 19-7 lead, allowing Cougars Liz Haskey, Conley Kipp, Tangerine Wiggs, Kimika Rozier and Alex Diemer to see action. WSU wins this set 25-21.
The Cougars will take on Cal State Northridge again Saturday night in Bohler Gym.
