Wildcats Rout Utes, 3-0

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Continuing a growing trend of jumping out early, No. 25 Arizona took set one, 25-16, and never looked back, routing Utah three sets to none to win the Santa Clara Invitational.
The Wildcats (8-0) received strong play from junior Tiffany Owens who recorded her third double-double of the season, totaling 11 kills on 27 attempts and 10 digs. Sophomore Courtney Karst had another strong outing as well tallying 11 kills and hitting .450.
In set one, Arizona went on a 5-1 run starting out and never relinquished the lead. Paige Weber posted 10 assists over the set while Owens had five kills and Courtney Karst provided four kills for the Cats.
In set two, it was more of the same as Arizona established an insurmountable lead and Utah could not keep up. Stephanie Snow recorded four blocks and three kills to put Arizona up two sets.
By the time set three got underway, the rout was on. Kari Bardis made her first appearance of the season and recorded a kill.
Over the entire match, junior setter Paige Weber had 33 assists, eight digs and three kills.
The Cats are now 24-2 through 26 total sets played this season. The team has also not dropped the opening set against any of its non-conference opponents and not been forced to play five sets. Capturing the SCU Invite also marks the third consecutive tournament in which the Wildcats have won.
Arizona now returns home to host the Arizona Invitational next weekend. The Cats will face Tulane on Sept. 19 at 11 a.m. then play New Mexico that evening at 7 p.m. The following Sunday Arizona will square off against UTEP beginning at 11 a.m.
