Viva Las Vegas: Day Two

Sept. 12, 2009

Another great win by the Beavers last night in their first match of the UNLV Alexis Park Invitational over No. 32 UC Santa Barbara. The team was still talking about freshman Alyssa O’Neil’s great block to finish off the match last night at breakfast. Remember O’Neil is only 5-9 and up until last night, never rotated to the front row in a match.

At last night’s match, familiar faces from Corvallis made their way to Cox Pavilion to cheer on the team. Athletic Director Bob De Carolis, Mike Parker (the voice of the Beavers), Keith Heyward (football cornerbacks coach), Tim Rabas (strength and conditioning coach) and a number of staff from the Beaver Athletic Student Fund were on hand. Oregon State had the most fans for the match, by far.

But that match is behind the team now, as it prepares for the UNLV Rebels. Winning today would guarantee back-to-back tournament titles for the Beavers, and mark the first time in three meetings that Oregon State has defeated UNLV. The Rebels took the match in 2006 in four.

Post-match, the volleyball team will be taking off from Vegas back to Oregon and missing the football game at Sam Boyd Stadium. Fans are still encouraged to stop by Cox Pavilion to watch the team compete at 3:30 p.m. Let’s upset the home team on “Beat the Beavers Day.”

It is freshman Camille Saxton’s first trip to Las Vegas and second road trip as a player for the Beavs, and she’s had plenty of experiences that make this trip a memorable one.

Being from Canada, I have never been to Vegas before. I must say, it is pretty crazy but has provided the team with plenty of laughs! We got to our hotel and were greeted by a family of cats. Yes, there were about 20 cats wandering around the premises of the hotel. I think they are here to keep the mice out of our rooms – how comforting. Then on the way to our match yesterday, we drove by several entertainment vans with blacked out windows. Our match was one of the most exciting yet. It was 27-26 in the fourth set, and the team was a little worried because we didn’t have any more subs left. Alyssa (one of our defensive specialists/liberos) was forced to play in the front row. Everyone on the team was holding their breaths as the last rally was being played, but then Alyssa jumped about 30 feet (gives or take a few) and blocked a girl straight down to win the match. It just made the close win that much more magical. After the match, most of the girls went out with their families so there were only three of us coming back to the hotel. At first I thought it would be a quiet night at the hotel, but as I walked toward dinner I saw a wedding taking place in the middle of the hotel.  Many of the coaches suggested that I go sit in at the ceremony because there was no one attending, but unfortunately my hunger got the best of me and I headed to the dinner table. After dinner on the way back to my room, I saw a man sitting in the bushes and like Alyssa, I jumped about 30 feet and then ran to my room to enjoy a movie night. Then this morning on our way to breakfast, there was a lady that was basically nude by the pool in a thong bikini. Im really excited for our match today. The team seems really upbeat, so hopefully we can take the energy into our game! Oh yes, and we have Britts beans, so we are sure to have the luck on our side.
