Volleyball Takes UNLV Alexis Park Invitational Title

Sept. 12, 2009

Las Vegas, Nev. – Seniors Bree Knitter (Fallbrook, Calif.) and Camilla Ah-Hoy (Laie, Hawai’i) were named Most Outstanding Hitter and Setter after the Oregon State volleyball team (7-2) swept UNLV (1-6) to win the UNLV Alexis Park Invitational title on Saturday afternoon.

Set scores were 25-22, 26-24, 25-17.

“We relaxed a little bit today and we didn’t perform well, especially in our blocking,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “But we served the ball well, and persevered in the second set earning seven consecutive points to win it.”

Knitter terminated 12 balls, with outside hitters senior Rachel Rourke (Queensland, Australia) and junior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) each earning 14 kills. Ah-Hoy nearly had her second double-double of the weekend with 40 assists and nine digs.

The two teams went back and forth in the first set with five tie scores with the Beavers holding a slim lead throughout. Knitter cranked a set-high eight of the teams 19 kills on only 13 attempts. Entering late in the set, freshman Tami Brown (Eugene, Ore.) closed out the set in favor of Oregon State with her first service ace of the season.

UNLV took a late lead in the second set, capitalizing on a pair of unforced Oregon State hitting errors and a pair of Rebel kills sitting at set point at 19-24. But six straight serves by Ah-Hoy coupled with a pair of Sawatzky kills and three Rebel hitting errors boosted the Beavers to a second set win.

The Beavers came out firing in the third set quickly taking the lead after a big Rourke kill to tie the score at one all. Oregon State built on its lead with the Rebels trailing by as many as seven. Nearly the entire bench earned some playing time in the match with freshman Megan McBride (Auburn, Wash.) recording a kill and two assists.

The Rebels were led by middle blocker Erin Greenwood with 11 kills. Libero Kela Lau Hee had a match-high 11 digs.

Oregon State heads to the Michigan ADIDAS Invitational next weekend, facing Dayton on Friday at 8:00 a.m. PT.

Oregon State Notes – Senior Bree Knitter set a new season high for kills with 12 … Freshman Ashley Eneliko set a new career best with two kills … Oregon State is now 1-2 all-time against UNLV; 5-0 in three set matches on the season.
