Cal Tied for No. 7 in USA Today Poll/No. 8 in AP Top 25

Sept. 13, 2009

BERKELEY - California has moved into a tie for the No. 7 position in the most recent USA Today poll and is No. 8 in the Associated Press Top 25, both released Sunday. The No. 7 USA Today spot is the highest the Golden Bears have ever been ranked as of Sept. 13 or in the second poll of a regular season and the highest overall since the club was No. 2 in both polls heading into a home game vs. Oregon State on Oct. 13, 2007. Cal has been ranked in the Top 10 at some point in five of the last six seasons (2004-07, '09).

The top four teams (Florida, Texas, USC, Alabama) are the same in both of the most recent polls. Mississippi and Penn State are tied for the fifth spot in the AP Top 25, while Penn State is fifth and Mississippi sixth in the USA Today ratings. The Golden Bears share the No. 7 position with LSU in the USA Today poll, while Brigham Young is No. 7 in the AP Top 25. LSU is No. 9 in the AP Top 25, while Brigham Young picks up that spot from USA Today. Boise State is No. 10 in both polls.

The Golden Bears face their first road test of the 2009 campaign when they travel to Minnesota this Saturday for a 9 a.m. PT kickoff (11 a.m. CT). The contest will be televised live nationally by ESPN.

Cal will also be on the road for its Pac-10 season-opener at Oregon on Saturday, Sept. 26 (12:30 p.m. PT), before returning to Memorial Stadium for a showdown with No. 3 USC on Saturday, Oct. 3 (5 p.m.). Both contests will be televised live by ABC.
