Larsen Scores in 2-0 Victory over Gonzaga
Sept. 13, 2009
LOS ANGELES - Senior forward Kristina Larsen scored a pair of goals to propel the No. 6 UCLA women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Gonzaga in the Bruins' 2009 home opener at Drake Stadium on Sunday.
Larsen put UCLA (4-1-1) ahead in just the second minute of Sunday's match, as she received a pass from freshman Zakiya Bywaters, who was making a run down the right side of the field. Larsen corralled the ball in the middle of the field and unleashed a 20-yard shot into the upper-left corner of the goal just past the outstretched hands of Gonzaga goalkeeper Jessie Thalman.
UCLA had several quality scoring chances throughout the first half, however Gonzaga managed to keep the Bruins off the scoreboard for the next 44 minutes of play.
Larsen, however, needed just 23 seconds following the intermission to notch her second goal of the day. Lauren Barnes set up the goal, racing down the left sideline before driving a left-footed ball into the Gonzaga box. Larsen just got a touch on it, one-timing it into the back of the net.
UCLA outshot Gonzaga, 17-5 on the afternoon. Bruin goalkeeper Chante' Sandiford made three saves in 90 minutes of action.
Next up for the Bruins is the UCLA Women's Cup, Sept. 18 and 20 at Drake Stadium. Action gets underway on Friday with Loyola Marymount facing Missouri at 4:30 p.m. That match will be followed by UCLA versus Utah at 7:00 p.m.
