Richards, Huskies Rally For 2-1 Double Overtime Victory
Sept. 13, 2009
DAVIS, Calif. - Washington sophomore Brent Richards scored the game-tying goal in the 80th minute and later netted the game-winner with three minutes left to play, leading the Huskies to a 2-1 double-overtime victory of UC-Davis Sunday at Aggie Field.
The win snapped a two-match losing streak for UW and upped the Huskies' record to 2-2 while UC-Davis fell to 2-3 on the season. The Huskies also snapped the Aggies' 12-match home unbeaten streak with the victory, a streak which dated back to 2007.
The Huskies fell behind in the 23rd minute and saw the Aggies control much of the run of play in the first half, taking eight shots to just four by the Huskies. But UW came out on the attack in the second half, not allowing the Aggies to take a shot over the next 45 minutes while the Huskies fired 15 second-half shots of their own.
Richards finally made one of those shots count when in the 80th minute, he took a pass from freshman Ryan Moore and drilled a shot from 10 yards out to tie the match.
The teams stayed even through the first overtime and with less than three minutes remaining in the second extra period, the match seemed headed for a draw. But Richards created a shot for himself, firing a low drive past the diving UC-Davis goalkeeper into the lower right corner of the net, winning the game for the Huskies with the unassisted goal.
The Huskies out-shot the Aggies, 23-10, for the game with Richards firing five shots and senior Casey Cunningham launching four.
Rylan Hawkins recovered from the early goal allowed to stop two Aggie shots and earn the victory.
'This was a big win for us,' Washington head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'Davis hit us with their best shot in the first half and we played well but we needed to toughen up a bit and do some more hard work in the second half. Thank heavens we were able to level it. Bret really got on track today so I was really pleased to see him get going with his goal scoring. The team responded well at halftime and the stats showed we dominated in the second half, but it wasn't easy for us, as it never is on the road. It was a satisfying victory after a couple tough losses last week so I'm proud of the guys. We're looking forward to being back home next week.'
The Huskies return to Seattle for their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 17 when they take on Portland at 7 p.m.
