Cougars In Second Place After Opening Day
Sept. 14, 2009
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State men's golf team finished the first day of the 2009 Palouse Collegiate Monday. The Cougars battled stiff winds all day at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman and will head into the final round in second place.
Kevin Tucker posted a career and tournament low of 66 (-6) in the second round, going 5-under par in the last four holes with two eagles. The senior has sole possession of the lead going into Tuesday, but says his game will not change.
'I have only had the lead once but I feel pretty comfortable,' Tucker said. 'I'm on my home course and it does not really change my mentality at all.
Hank Frame made his collegiate debut at the tournament scoring even-par in his first round as a Cougar. One might say the step up did not rattle him as he went 3-under in the last eight holes to finish with a 33(-3) on the back nine of his first round. The Spokane, Wash. native posted a two-round total of 145 (+1), good enough for a share of eighth place.
Austin Hurt opened the tournament with a even-par round and finished at 148 (+4), putting him in a tie for 20th. Junior Nick Ellis and sophomore Trent Sanders rounded out the Cougar squad each marking a 152 (+8).
The five-man contingent finished one stroke behind tournament leaders Sacramento State, and five strokes ahead of cross-border rivals Idaho, who are currently in third. Head coach Walt Williams is excited to be such a good position at the season opener.
'It would be so great to win the first tournament', Williams said. 'It would be a huge boost of confidence to win in such a difficult field. There is a lot of work to be done but we are in a good position to win.'
Four players also represented WSU as individuals. Senior Nick Grigsby led the group with a score of 151 (+7), and was followed closely by John Moon and Paul Mitzel, who will both enter the final round with marks of 152.
Redshirt sophomore transfer Robert Murray made his WSU debut posting a 76 in the first round, contributing to his total of 158.
Play will resume tomorrow, Sept. 15, with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. View complete results and statistics by clicking the link below.
