Golden Bears Move into Second Place at Golfweek Conference Challenge

Sept. 14, 2009

PRIMM, NEVADA -

The California Golden Bears moved up the rankings into second place at the Golfweek Conference Challenge after Monday afternoon's second round of play. The Bears dropped eight strokes off their first-round team score to post a 292, the lowest team total for the second round of 18 holes. Overall, the Bears' 592 places them in second place, just two strokes behind Chatanooga, who moved into first place at the completion of the second round.

Sophomore Diane Kwon duplicated her first round success. Kwon was in fifth place after shooting a one-over 73 on Sunday. In the second round, Kwon posted another one-over 73 and remains in a tie for fifth place. Kwon got off to a rough start with a double-bogey on the first hole, but birdies on seven and eight and a string of ten consecutive pars helped her retain her hold fifth-place.

Junior Pia Halbig had the lowest score of the second round, shooting a three-under 69, to move her overall score to +1. Halbig shot four birdies on the front nine, including posting a two on the par-three ninth to make the turn at -3. She parred all of the holes on the back nine to end the day with that same score.

Halbig currently ranks second among individuals, five strokes behind Oklahoma State's Caroline Hedwall. Halbig's 69 was just the second sub-70 score of the tournament, the other being a 68 posted by Hedwell in the opening round.

Cal newcomer Emily Childs had the most-impressive Day Two turnaround, shaving seven strokes off her first round total. Childs, a sophomore transfer playing in her first tournament for Cal, logged a +2 (74) in Monday's action.

The Golfweek Conference Challenge is a tournament featuring one team each from 18 different conferences competing on the Desert Course at the Primm Valley Golf Resort outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. The teams will wrap up play on the par-72, 6,135 yard course with their final 18 holes on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
