No. 2 Stanford's Nogueira Named Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Sept. 15, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, CALIF-- Stanford freshman Mariah Nogueira has been named Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 8-14, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
A native of Westminster, Calif., Nogueira scored her first-collegiate goal on a header in the 56th minute to break a scoreless tie and lead Stanford to a 2-0 win over then-No. 5 Notre Dame at the Santa Clara Classic. In addition to her game-winning score, Nogueira, a defensive midfielder, came up big for the Cardinal on the defensive end, helping to hold both the Fighting Irish and then-No. 7 Purdue to only seven shots each and allowing only one goal on the weekend in two wins for Stanford.
The freshman is proving to be a strong anchor for Stanford, particularly in front of the penalty box, preventing her opponents from mounting dangerous attacks up the middle. Stanford has only given up one goal in the past four games, in part because of the defensive presence of Nogueira in the middle.
For her efforts at both ends of the field, Nogueira, earned all-tournament honors at the Santa Clara Classic.
This is the first -career weekly honor for Nogueira and Stanford's 24th Pac-10 Player of the Week all-time.
Also nominated: Alexandra Elston, ASU; Katrin Omarsdottir, CAL; Jen Stoltenberg, ORE; Ashley Seal, OSU; Alyssa Davila, USC; Veronica Perez, WASH; Carly Dobratz, WSU
