Trojan Tennis Picks Up Preseason Rankings
Sept. 15, 2009
The USC men's and women's tennis teams boast highly regarded rosters once again as the 2009-10 season approaches. Owners of the 2009 NCAA Team Championship, the USC men have four players ranked in singles and three doubles teams among the nation's best in the ITA Preseason Rankings. On the women's side, the 2009 Pac-10 Champions have three women ranked in singles and two doubles teams ranked.
The USC men finished last season ranked No. 1 in the nation as NCAA champs. They return all but one player from that championship squad, and are led this season by a set of four ranked singles stars. Leading the group at No. 3 in the nation is senior Robert Farah - the 2009 Pac-10 Player of the Year - followed by No. 18 sophomore Steve Johnson, No. 49 junior Jaak Poldma and No. 99 sophomore Matt Kecki. Those four also have combined forces for doubles rankings as well, as Farah and Johnson - the 2009 Pac-10 Doubles Team of the Year - sit at No. 3 on the doubles charts with Kecki and Poldma at No. 35. Also in the doubles mix is the new pairing of sophomore Daniel Nguyen and freshman JT Sundling at No. 40. That team had a successful summer together and hit the bigtime with a spot at the 2009 U.S. Open in the doubles main draw.
The USC women wound down last season in the top-10 as the nation's No. 9 ranked team after winning their first-ever Pac-10 Championship. One player also graduated from that roster, leaving a trio of Trojans holding preseason singles rankings. Junior Maria Sanchez is on top to start with a No. 17 pick in singles. Senior Sarah Fansler is at No. 30, followed by No. 53 sophomore Alison Ramos. On the doubles scene, Fansler is back paired with her familiar teammate Lyndsay Kinstler as the No. 26 doubles team in the preseason rankings, and Sanchez is teamed up at No. 47 with newcomer Valeria Pulido.
