Cross Country Heads to Seattle for Sundodger Invitational
Sept. 16, 2009
Corvallis, Ore. - The Oregon State cross country team heads to Seattle on Saturday for the 18th Annual Sundodger Cross Country Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington. The women's race is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. at Lincoln Park with 23 teams competing.
The 17 Beavers (one unattached) will compete on the 6,000-meter course beginning and ending in the play area of the park. The course is a mixture of grass, dirt, light gravel and bark chips.
'It will be a great test in two ways,' head coach Kelly Sullivan said. 'One, we have been training pretty tough these past two weeks, and it will be good to see how we respond to that. And since Washington is the defending national champion and ranked No. 1 in the first poll that came out this week, it is a good measurement to see where we are against the top team in the country and the rest of the teams that will be there.'
Oregon State is led by juniors Jennifer Macias (Hermiston, Ore.), Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson (Forest Ranch, Calif.) and Krista Stangel (Enterprise, Ore.), while adding fellow juniors Abby Chesimet (Astoria, Ore.) and Kambria Schumacher (Sweet Home, Ore.) and senior Jenny O'Connor (Newfane, N.Y.).
Sophomore Cassandra Schumacher (Sweet Home, Ore.), redshirt sophomore Laura Carlyle (Kelowna, British Columbia) and redshirt freshmen Natosha Buruse (Ridgefield, Wash.), Lorine Cruz (Grants Pass, Ore.), Emily Olsen (Medford, Ore.), Laurel Parks (Grants Pass, Ore.), Olivia Poblacion (Portland, Ore.) will also be competing. And three true freshmen, Jenny Elder (Scappoose, Ore.), Erin Jones (Hood River, Ore.) and Sandra Martinez (Yakima, Wash.) are slated to race. Freshman Sabrina Lopez (Los Angeles, Calif.) will compete unattached.
Kendra Schaff of the University of Washington holds the 6,000-meter meet record, finishing in 19:58 last year. The Beavers finished third last season behind Washington and UC Davis, beating out six other schools.
