Huskies Record Second Straight Shutout In Win Over Utah State
Sept. 18, 2009
SEATTLE - The Washington women's soccer team recorded their second consecutive shutout, getting goals from Veronica Perez and Kate Deines to earn a 2-0 victory over Utah State Friday at Husky Soccer Field.
The win gives UW a 5-2 record on the season while Utah State falls to 4-3-1.
The Huskies dominated the match from beginning to end, out-shooting the Aggies 23-4 for the game after not allowing a shot in the first half.
The senior Perez got the Dawgs on the board in the 40th minute, heading in a long pass from fellow senior Nikki Murray. Murray launched a free kick from well outside the box toward the goal, and Perez headed it in to give UW the early lead.
Deines then gave UW some insurance in the 56th minute when she took a cross from junior McKenna Waitley and volleyed it in from close range to put the match away.
The goal for Perez was her third of the season while Deines recorded her second. Waitley's assist was her team-leading third of the season.
'Obviously we would have liked to finish more of the chances we created but I liked the energy we had and I liked the way we handled their direct pressure,' Washington head coach Lesle Gallimore said. 'We defended their attack pretty well and we didn't come back with the long ball at them. We played it and possessed it pretty well. I was happy with how we moved the ball. It's still finishing, finishing, finishing but I'm never going to complain when we win and get a shutout. We had a lot of good contributions from a lot of different people and that was impressive. Nikki came in and had an impact right away with the free kick, the service and the goal. She's very capable in those situations. She settles it well and can pinpoint it and get some goals for us.'
The Huskies were able to empty their bench in the second half, playing a total of 21 players in the match.
UW hits the road next week when they travel down to California to play UC-Irvine on Saturday, Sept. 25 and Cal-State Fullerton on Sunday, Sept. 27. They return to Seattle for a three-game home stand starting on Friday, Oct. 2 against Gonzaga at 5 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the UW men's soccer team, who will follow at 7 p.m.
