Rourke and Sawatzky Lead Beavers to Sweep of Marquette
Sept. 18, 2009
Ann Arbor, Mich. – Senior Rachel Rourke (Queensland, Australia) and junior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) combined for 30 of the Oregon State volleyball team’s 44 total kills in Friday evening’s sweep of Marquette, 25-22, 25-23, 25-19, in match two of the Michigan ADIDAS Invitational.
“When your left sides (Rachel and Jill) hit numbers like they hit, that’s the kind of numbers we need to be effective,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “We just had a little more energy in that match. That was a tough loss this morning, but we rebounded, and that’s a really good sign. We still need to work on our defense. Our defense and blocking haven’t been up to par this weekend. To have a great match tomorrow against Michigan, we need those to show up.”
Sawatzky led all hitters with 17 kills, while Rourke added 13, both hitting near the .350 mark. Senior Camilla Ah-Hoy (Laie, Hawai’i) earned her second double-double of the day, seventh of the season with 32 assists and a team-high 14 digs.
Oregon State (8-3) took the early first set lead with Marquette trailing by as many as four. But in a small shift of momentum, the Golden Eagles (9-4) hit 20 first, leading by one point. Sawatzky tied things up with a kill before Marquette took it over again. A senior Lexie Rathgeber (White Rock, British Columbia) kill tied things at 21 all before another Sawatzky shot put the Beavers back in the driver seat. Rourke’s fourth kill of the set put it away in favor of the Beavers.
The Beavers got off to an even more dominant start in the second set, starting with a 7-1 run, causing Marquette to burn its first timeout. Oregon State continued to lead through the set, despite a short run by the Golden Eagles, reaching the halfway point first with a four-point lead. After a service error by the Beavers, and a few Marquette points, Sawatzky found the floor to help the Beavers take the 2-0 lead.
The two teams exchanged five leads and had 12 ties before the Beavers took the eventual lead at the halfway mark, leading the Golden Eagles by one. Rathgeber tallied the final point of the match on an overpass kill to boost the Beavers to the sweep.
Marquette’s Ashley Beyer led the Golden Eagle offense with 13 kills, while libero Kelsey Warner posted a match-high 20 digs.
