Stanford Erupts For Big Second Half
Sept. 18, 2009
STANFORD, Calif. - Morgan Redman scored second-half goals three minutes apart to help No. 3 Stanford post a 4-0 women's soccer victory over No. 23 Colorado on Friday night at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. Redman's two goals - her first scores of the year - made her the fifth different Stanford player to register a multi-goal performance this season.
The victory, which came on the first day of the 15th annual Stanford Nike Invitational, extended Stanford's perfect season-opening start to 8-0-0, its best since the Cardinal won its first eight in 2002. The shutout was the Cardinal's fourth of the season.
Stanford's three second-half goals, including Kelley O'Hara's team-leading ninth of the season, means the Cardinal has scored 22 of its 27 goals in the second half.
Defender Ali Riley opened the scoring in the 24th minute by beating a defender and the goalkeeper on an overlapping run up the left side, and slotting the ball over the line from an acute angle for her first goal since moving from forward last season.
Stanford resumes play in the tournament Sunday at 1:30 p.m. against Wisconsin (4-3-1), which lost to Santa Clara, 2-1, in the opening match. Colorado (4-4-0) plays No. 12 Santa Clara (6-2-0) in Sunday's opener, at 11 a.m.
