USC Snags Road Win Over No. 21 Oklahoma State
Sept. 18, 2009
STILLWATER, OKLA. - The USC women's soccer team snagged a road win over a ranked team for the first time this season and bumped its record back above .500 with a 1-0 victory at No. 21 Oklahoma State. Ringing up the Trojans' winning strike was freshman Samantha Johnson, who got her second goal of the year in the 41st minute of action. The Women of Troy remained in control the rest of the way, as goalkeeper Kristin Olsen recorded her first solo shutout of the season. USC improves to 4-3-0 on the year with the win, while Oklahoma State goes to 5-3-0.
USC had an early chance with the first corner kick of the game, but the Cowgirls generated a dangerous scoring opportunity later in the half. Kristin Olsen made the save on a hard Oklahoma State shot and a Cowgirl striker was called offisdes just before getting to the loose ball and putting it to the back of the net. With the scoring chance negated, USC pressed on and matched its hosts shot-for-shot in the first half. As time in the first half waned, USC earned a free kick on a Cowgirl foul. Karter Haug sent the long ball in, and Samantha Johnson got to the loose bouncing ball and drilled it in from 18 yards out to put USC on the board for halftime.
The Trojans worked hard to keep control of the second half, managing the clock and the shot opportunities to the tune of a 9-3 shot advantage in the half. Olsen maintained dominance in the goal for her 21st career solo shutout, while the USC back line of freshman Stephanie Morgan, sophomores Claire Schloemer and Chelsea Buehning and junior Karter Haug helped limit Oklahoma State's looks on goal.
USC remains in the state of Oklahoma for another game this weekend, heading to Norman, Okla., to take on Oklahoma in a 1 p.m. CT game on Sunday (Sept. 20).
