TUCSON - University of Arizona Volleyball head coach Dave Rubio has been around some big winning streaks in his 18-year tenure in Tucson. So he will be the first to tell you just how hard it is to rip off eight consecutive victories.
'Getting out to a good start is always nice at the beginning of the season,' said Rubio. 'We would like to keep this momentum going through this weekend, but we always stress to take one match at a time.'
After opening the year playing in the Sheraton Cardinal Classic in Louisville, Ky., beating Louisville, Belmont and Pittsburgh, Arizona proceeded to sweep the Wildcat Classic by Marriott University Park. The women then traveled last weekend to the Bay Area to play Santa Clara and Utah, sweeping both teams in straight sets.
What may be even more impressive is the fact that the Wildcats have done most of their work so far playing either on the road or on neutral courts. Arizona is 2-0 when playing as a true road team and 3-0 when appearing against other top schools in a foreign arena.
'Playing in the Louisville Tournament and having some success to begin the year was big for us just with the physicality those teams presented, added Rubio. 'I like the way we have battled thus far.'
This weekend the Cats will get an opportunity to return home as they host the Arizona Invitational. In the tournament the team will tangle with the likes of an always tough Tulane Green Wave as well as New Mexico and UTEP.
'We are just focusing on this weekend and we can worry about the start of conference play when its here,' said junior outside hitter Tiffany Owens.
Another note Arizona will be looking to achieve is the school record of 10 straight wins to begin a season. Rubio's bunch in 1998 owns that record and his '09 team would like nothing better than to etch their names into the history books.
