Women's Soccer Extends Win Streak to Six, Defeats Dartmouth 2-0
Sept. 18, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's soccer team won its sixth straight game, its longest win streak since 1995, as the Beavers defeated Dartmouth, 2-0, in the opener of the Oregon State Nike Invitational on Friday night. With the win, Oregon State improved to 6-1-0 on the season, while Dartmouth fell to 3-2-0 with the loss.
'I'm very happy with the result as this came against a very good team,' head coach Linus Rhode said. 'We played well and the team fought hard for the full 90 minutes. We kept our cool when they started to put pressure on us in the second half and we finished strong.'
The Beavers would get all the scoring they would need as Melinda Ingalls connected on her second goal of the year in the ninth minute. Off a beautiful cross from senior Rachael Axon, who worked her way past a pair of defenders in order to lob the ball towards the middle, Ingalls drilled a header past the outstretched arms of the keeper to give Oregon State the 1-0 lead.
Oregon State would control the pace for the rest of the half as the Beavers took a 1-0 lead into the break. The score remained the same until the 85th minute as Melissa Peck would put the game away with her first goal of the season. Off a cross from Jayne Eadie, Ingalls headed the ball past the goalkeeper and to Peck as she collected the pass and redirected the ball into the net to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead.
It was more than enough for the Oregon State defense and goalkeeper Colleen Boyd as the Beavers recorded their third shutout in the last four games. The shutout lowered their Pac-10 Conference leading goals against average to 0.57 goals per game as Boyd picked up her second shutout of the season.
Boyd made two saves in the victory while Colleen Hogan made five saves in the loss for the Big Green.
Dartmouth, fresh off a win over No. 12 West Virginia, had its best scoring chance in the opening minutes; however, Boyd made a leaping stop on Ali Hubbard's shot directed at the top-right corner.
For the contest, Oregon State out-shot Dartmouth, 18-7, as Axon and Ingalls each had four shots to lead the Beavers.
Oregon State will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1:30 p.m. when the Beavers conclude play at the Oregon State Nike Invitational against Denver. The Pioneers fell to Oregon, 4-1, in the day's opening match of the invitational.
