Seventh-Ranked Bruins Swept by Long Beach State

FULLERTON, Calif. - For the second night in a row, the seventh-ranked Bruins were defeated by a Big West Conference opponent, as Long Beach State swept UCLA on Saturday night at Titan Gym. Set scores were 25-19, 25-16, 25-14. Junior Dicey McGraw led the Bruins with nine kills and six digs.
The Bruins fall to 10-3 on the season, while the 49ers improve to 7-3.
Sophomore Amanda Gil had six kills and no errors in 10 attacks for a .600 hitting percentage, sophomore Katie Camp had five kills and five blocks and sophomore Lainey Gera added 12 digs. The Bruins hit .120 as a team and never led at any point in the match.
The 49ers scored the first seven points of the match and were never threatened in winning the opener. The Bruins closed to within three on a few occasions, but got no closer, losing 25-19. Camp had three kills in the first, as the Bruins were out-hit .370 to .225.
The Bruins were tied at one and three in the second set, but the 49ers scored the next three and never trailed for the rest of the second. UCLA could not string more than three points together and got no closer than two the remainder of the way, falling 25-16. UCLA was led by McGraw's three kills in the second, while Camp added four blocks. The Bruins hit .000 in the set, while the 49ers hit at a .312 clip.
Things went from bad to worse in the third set, as the 49ers recorded another wire-to-wire victory after scoring the first five points. The Bruins were unable to score more than two points in a row and ended up dropping the set 25-14. McGraw had four kills and no errors in the third, while freshman Mari Hole posted three kills.
Naomi Washington paced Long Beach State with 13 kills, while Brittney Herzog added 10. Long Beach State hit .398 as a team.
The Bruins look to the right the ship next weekend when they open Pac-10 play on the road. UCLA faces Arizona State on Friday and Arizona on Saturday. Both matches start at 7 p.m. and will have Gametracker on the schedule page of UCLABruins.com.
