Women's Soccer Defeats No. 21 Denver for Seventh Straight Win
Sept. 20, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's soccer team won its seventh straight game, the second longest win streak in school history, as the Beavers defeated No. 21 Denver, 3-1, in the final game of the Oregon State Nike Invitational Sunday. With the win, Oregon State improved to 7-1-0 on the season while Denver fell to 5-3-1 on the year with the loss.
'We're really starting to come together as a team,' head coach Linus Rhode said. 'We worked extremely hard on the defensive side of the ball and we just kept pushing. Overall, it was a great weekend.'
Following a Denver goal by Emily Stewart in the second minute of the match, it was all Oregon State the rest of the way as the Beavers would score three unanswered for a two-goal victory.
Courtney Wetzel tied the contest in the 37th minute as the junior defender blasted a free-kick from just outside the penalty area into the upper right-hand corner of the net for her second goal of the season.
With the score tied 1-1 at the half, Oregon State would take the lead for good in the 69th minute. On a well-placed cross from freshman Jayne Eadie, Chelsea Buckland headed the ball into an open net to give the Beavers a 2-1 lead. Ashley Folsom also earned an assist on the play, the fourth goal of the season for the freshman forward.
The Beavers would add a late insurance goal in the 80th minute as midfielder Rachael Axon delivered a perfect pass forward to Melissa Peck. The senior midfielder easily headed the ball into the net to finish her run for her second goal of the season.
Denver would be unable to cut into the lead the rest of the way as the Beavers closed out the Pioneers for a 3-1 win.
Oregon State controlled possession throughout, holding a 21-6 edge in shots, as Buckland led the way with seven shots in the victory.
The seven straight wins for Oregon State is the longest win streak for the Beavers since a nine-game stretch during the 1994 season.
Ashley Wood made one stop in net to pick up the win for Oregon State while Maria Khan made five stops in goal in the loss for Denver.
Oregon State will look to make it eight wins in a row when the Beavers return to action on Friday, Sept. 25, when they travel to Portland, Ore., to face No. 2 Portland at 7:00 p.m.
