Los Angeles Sparks To Host Western Conference Finals At UCLA's Pauley Pavilion
Sept. 21, 2009
Los Angeles, CA - The Los Angeles Sparks will host the 2009 WNBA Western Conference Finals at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion against either the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday, Sept. 23 or the San Antonio Silver Stars on Saturday, Sept. 26, if necessary. The Sparks won the first round series against the Seattle Storm 2-1 by winning at home on September 16th and Sunday in Seattle, 75-64. With the win, the Sparks advance to the Western Conference Finals for the eighth time in 10 trips to the postseason.
'Postseason scheduling is always a challenge when you call a venue as popular as STAPLES Center home,' said Sparks President Kristin Bernert. 'Pauley Pavilion has a rich tradition of basketball excellence, and we are excited about the chance to continue that tradition on 'Nell and John Wooden Court.' We have a great relationship with USC and it will only get stronger with Coach Cooper headed there. This year, we have a fantastic opportunity to bring Sparks basketball to the Westside of Los Angeles through a continued partnership with UCLA.'
During the 2009 season, the Sparks launched a partnership with both the UCLA Athletic Department and UCLA Anderson's Summer Institute in Sports Marketing and Management to help engage the students in their academics and also to raise interest and awareness in both women's basketball and the Los Angeles Sparks.
Elements of the partnership included UCLA Night at the Sparks game on August 19th, developed and orchestrated by UCLA Anderson's Summer Institute in Sports Marketing and Management students, a basketball clinic run by UCLA assistant women's basketball coaches Tasha Butts, Stacie Terry and Tony Perotti featuring Sparks forward Candace Parker, a presentation by Sparks President Kristin Bernert to the UCLA Anderson's Summer Institute in Sports Marketing and Management class and cross-promotion efforts between both basketball programs. In addition, UCLA Head Women's Basketball Coach Nikki Caldwell was honored as the Sports Recipient at the inaugural presentation of the 'Lisa Leslie Inspiring Women' awards on August 19th.
'We are very excited to have the Sparks play their Western Conference Finals game here at UCLA' said UCLA Senior Associate Athletic Director Petrina Long. 'The partnership we have developed is great for women's basketball in the greater Los Angeles area. In addition, it is especially gratifying to see one of our own Bruins, Noelle Quinn, return to Pauley Pavilion as an important member of the Sparks team.'
The Conference Finals are a best of three series scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 23, Friday, Sept. 25 and Saturday, Sept. 26. If the Phoenix Mercury win their Western Conference semifinals series against the San Antonio Silver Stars, the Sparks will be the lower seed and will open the Conference Finals at Pauley Pavilion on Wednesday, Sept. 23. If San Antonio wins the series, the Sparks be the higher seed and will play the second game of the series at STAPLES Center and the third game, if necessary, at Pauley Pavilion on Sept. 26.
Season ticket holders who have purchased playoff strips will receive comparable seating to their regular STAPLES Center seats and all MVP tickets will be available at will-call at the Pauley Pavilion box office. Because it is uncertain where Game 1 will be played, only $19 general admission seats that will be valid at both Pauley Pavilion on Sept. 23 and STAPLES Center on Sept. 25 are on sale at this time. Once the Sparks' opponent and home game dates become available, all tickets will go on sale. The Pauley Pavilion box office will have tickets available for purchase on game day only.
UCLA students can show their school-issued ID at the Pauley Pavilion box office on game day to purchase a limited number of tickets for $4.50 in honor of UCLA Alum and #45, Noelle Quinn. Faculty and staff can show their school-issued ID to purchase tickets for $9.
To celebrate the Sparks coming to Westwood for the Western Conference Finals, the Friends of West LA, a non-profit organization, have purchased 200 tickets to recognize the outstanding community contributions of local youth. The tickets will be donated to West LA youth who have made a difference in their community and wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to experience and enjoy Sparks basketball.
