Bears Picked to Win the Pac-10 in Two Preseason Polls

The California men's basketball team was selected to win the Pac-10 regular-season title in both the Athlon Sports and the Blue Ribbon College Yearbook preseason predictions. In addition, the Golden Bears earned a ranking of No. 8 in the Blue Ribbon College Yearbook preseason Top 25 and No. 14 in the Athlon Sports preseason rankings. In both top-25 polls, Cal was the highest ranked Pac-10 school.
Athlon Sports' other predictions for the 2009-10 season have senior guard Patrick Christopher, a 2009 All-Pac-10 first-team selection, garnering conference Player of the Year honors, and fellow senior guard Jerome Randle earning All-Pac-10 first-team honors for the second straight campaign. The publication also slates senior forward Theo Robertson as a second-team all-conference choice.
Blue Ribbon College Yearbook also picked Christopher and Randle as all-conference first teamers, with Randle winning the Pac-10 Player of the Year award.
Athlon Sports also has Washington in its preseason Top 25 poll at No. 17, while Blue Ribbon College Yearbook has the Huskies coming in at No. 23.
The Bears open the 2009-10 season in the regional portion of the 2009 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer on Monday, Nov. 9, when Cal faces Murray State at 8 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. Cal will play Chico State in an exhibition game on Thursday, Nov. 5, at Haas Pavilion.
Cal finished the 2008-09 season with an overall record of 22-11, after the Bears tied for third in the Pac-10 and advanced to their first NCAA Tournament since 2006.
