Dive Coach Receives Prestigious Award
Sept. 22, 2009
CHICAGO- University of Arizona’s Head Diving Coach Dr. Michele Mitchell was honored with the Phil Boggs award at the United States Aquatic Sports banquet last Saturday.
“I was really and truly surprised,” said Mitchell. “When the announcer started describing the winner, I was running it all back in my head trying to figure out who it was.”
The Phil Boggs award honors those who have achieved individual excellence in diving and have given back a part of themselves to assure the sport's continuation and success. The award is not presented annually, but rather on a deserving basis. It has not been awarded since 2005.
“I think it’s a symbol of respect for one’s volunteer efforts to perpetuate the sport for the next generation,” said Mitchell.
Mitchell has been a part of nearly every committee within USA Diving in the past 15 years. She currently serves as Chair on the USA Diving Committee for Competitive Excellence and formerly served as the NCAA Swimming and Diving Rules Committee Chair. She is also an active member of the Women’s Sports Foundation Grant Review Committee, the University of Arizona Hall of Fame Committee and the Equity and Student-Athlete Welfare Committee. Mitchell was a member of the United States Diving Foundation and the USOC Athlete Support Committee.
In addition to her numerous committee work, Mitchell is a two-time Olympic silver medalist. She won medals on the 10-meter platform at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, and the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. A Wildcat alumna, Mitchell was a member of the University of Arizona Dive Team. During her collegiate career 1979 to 1983, she was a four-time All-American and nine-time U.S. national champion.
“To be publically recognized for years of service to an organization that I hold so dear to my hear is an honor in itself,” said Mitchell, “And to have the University of Arizona be synonymous with my name brings it even closer to home.”
