Thompson Posts Second-Lowest Round on Day Two
Sept. 22, 2009
Pullman Wash. - The Washington State University women's golf team crept up the leaderboard in round two of the Inland Cup Tuesday, led by freshman Ali Thompson.
The Cougars jumped Pacific-10 Conference rival Oregon State, Montana and Portland to finish day two in sole possession of fifth place. WSU entered the day in a tie for seventh, but shot the second-lowest team score of the day (304). The Cougars also made the second-largest improvement in the field from round one to round two.
'We cut our score in half today,' said WSU Women's head coach Kelli Kamimura. 'With five golfers playing in their first tournament and it being the first one of the year for everyone, they really went out and played their game. Being focused allowed everyone to improve their scores from day one.'
Thompson led the way for the Cougars again in day two, posting the second-lowest round of the tournament with a 71 (-1). She moved into fourth place overall with a 148 (+4), only three strokes behind the leader going into the final round. Coach Kamimura was not surprised at the freshman's early success.
'Ali is so talented, very focused and a competitive, smart, solid golfer. Even as a freshmen she is so driven, so it is not a surprise at all that she has played so well.'
The Cougars' three lowest scores came from freshmen in round two, as Ellen Park and Emma Betland also shined for WSU. Park shot a second-round 77 (+5), while Betland shot 78 (+6). The duo head into the final round tied for 24th with a two-round total of 159 (+19).
Sophomore Kristen Allard finished the day with a 79 (+7) and a tournament-total of 159 (+15), also good for 24th-place tie. Junior Allison Travis posted a 78 (+6) on the day and is currently sitting one stroke behind her three teammates at 160 (+16).
Three women competed as individuals for the Cougars. Sophomore Kaitlin Parsons carded an 81 (+9) for a total score of 168., freshmen Brenda Jesernig carded an 86 (+14) for a total of 174 and Julia Manseau shot an 89 (+17).
The final round will resume Wednesday with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. Complete results and in-depth statistics are available by clicking the link below. Live, nine-hole scoring is also available at www.golfstat.com.
