Sept. 23, 2009
Corvallis, Ore. - The Oregon State men's soccer team returns home this weekend to host the Hensor/Zaher Memorial Classic Friday Sept. 25 thru Sunday Sept. 27 at Paul Lorenz Field.
The Hensor/Zaher Memorial was created in 2004 to honor two student-athletes who were tragically last just a few months apart. Stephen Hensor was a midfielder on the 2000 and 2001 squads, but was stricken with cancer and died on Aug. 30, 2002.
Then, following a season that saw him earn Freshman All-American and Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors, Joe Zaher died in a car accident on Dec. 1, 2002.
This year's event will host teams from across the nation in Northern Illinois University, Seattle University, and Marist College.
Seattle and Marist get the event going with a match Friday, Sept.27 starting at 5:30 p.m. which will be followed by the Oregon State match with Northern Illinois.
Oregon State comes into the match with Northern Illinois with a 3-1-2 record after suffering their first loss of the season last weekend to Seattle University in a 1-0 loss in overtime.
The Classic continues Saturday Sept. 26 when Northern Illinois takes on Marist at 11am and the Beavers finish up the event with a Sunday afternoon match Sept. 27 at 1pm against Marist College.
The Hensor/Zaher Memorial marks the final preseason matches for the Beavers as they head in to conference play when they host UCLA Oct. 2 at 7pm.
