UA soccer will take on UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly this weekend in California Friday, September 25 and Sunday, September 27. The Wildcats are currently 2-5-1 after last weekend’s 1-0 loss to BYU.
The Wildcats held off BYU’s offense for 84 minutes, when BYU’s Kassidy Shumway sunk a shot past senior Devon Wharf in the 85th minute. Arizona tried to equalize in the last five minutes, but were unable. On the night, Wharf had seven saves, including two close calls near the end of the first half.
About the Gauchos: The Gauchos are currently 3-4-1, coming off 2-0 win at Cal State Bakersfield.
About the Mustangs: The Mustangs are currently 4-4, coming off a pair of 1-0 wins at Air Force and Colorado College.
All about the freshmen and sophomores: The Wildcat freshman and sophomores outnumber the juniors and seniors 12-8, with Alex Smith, Brittany Berger, Amy Steiner, Kristin Strother, Renae Cuellar, Karli Hedlund, Itzel Rodriguez, Jessica Culver, Ariel Boulicault, Kristin Magyar, Kat Leibbrandt, and Susan Melendez participating in the seasons’ opening matches.
Head Coach Dan Tobias: Dan Tobias led his team to a 9-11 record in 2008, giving him a 55-59-8 record in his six years at Arizona. Tobias coached the Wildcats to the program's first appearance in the Sweet 16 in 2005. In 2004, Tobias led the Wildcats to a 15-6 overall record. Additionally, his 6-3 Pac-10 record gave Arizona its first Pac-10 championship in history of the program and was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year for the second time.
Next Up: The Wildcats return home next week for their final non-conference match against Loyola Marymount at Murphy Field at Mulcahy Stadium on Friday, October 2nd at 7pm.
