Verner's Views - Bye Week Edition
Sept. 23, 2009
Sorry everyone for being so late on all the action in my life! But I will give you a breakdown on some of the events that have taken place in our journey to become 3-0.
We have beaten San Diego State, Tennessee and Kansas State the past three weeks. Each opponent was a good team and gave us a great effort.
San Diego State was a good one to get our feet wet with the debut of many young players and future stars for our team. Rahim Moore had three picks, tying the school record, and was Walter Camp and Pac-10 Player of the Week. Also, the offense looked good under the leadership of Kevin Prince, who managed the game like a champ! Other players did well and I have a special shout out to Jerzy Siewierski for the blocked field goal that allowed me to score my fourth TD. So it was great winning the opener.
The Tennessee game was amazing! Just the whole experience once we arrived in Knoxville was top of the line! We ate some southern food which was good and got to play in the historic Neyland Stadium! I was in awe at the look of it. It is a must-play stadium in your football career! The fans were die hard volunteers who love football. It was a pleasure playing against Eric Berry and the rest of the Vols, but at the end of the day, I was fortunate to be on the better team that day. I should not highlight any one player but the whole team effort in the game. I got my first pick of the season and hopefully will accumulate many more! But all three phases (offense, defense, special teams) took part in a great road win for our team.
The last game was Kansas State, and they played us very tough at the Rose Bowl. Daniel Thomas ran the ball strong and made us work to bring him down. The defense once again played well and made stops when needed. And the offense behind Kevin Craft stepped up nicely and did a very good job! So I am happy with the promise of our team as we head towards everyone getting healthy and improving each day!
We have a bye week this week so we can rest up and enjoy a week of college football without worrying about playing. I will be watching the Cal game, the Stanford game and others! I also plan on going to Mayfair's football game as it will be my only chance for a while. Hopefully I get to chill with my family, friends, and girlfriend over the bye weekend!
On another note, we start school Thursday and I'm pretty excited and sad at the same time. It officially means I'm a fourth year and about to embark on this difficult journey. I have three upper division classes -- Stats 100, Management 122 and Math 131a. I have them all five days of study as well, but it will make me a better person. I'm getting close to that degree and success guaranteed in some area! Most importantly, I get to help the freshmen adjust to the schedule change and let them know how they have to focus in on both school and football.
As school is about to begin, we had our annual 2009 Bruin Bash where we had LMFAO and Clipse perform in Pauley! They were very good and entertaining. I was with my young teammates and it was cool watching them enjoy themselves. I felt so old at times since I am a senior. But I still managed to have fun.
But the highlight of the night was seeing 'Law Abiding Citizen' premier in our ballroom. It was a great movie starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx. It had action and a great plot, I definitely recommend it. I saw the movie with Tobi Umodu, Frank Guzman, and Marci Bernholtz. The night was a success and a great way to start the academic year!
I don't know if my girl, Sina'e, wants me to do this, but I am proud of her, so I wanted to say she is competing in the Miss California pageant. She is in the district round now. She is very excited and needs support. If you want to help her raise money to fight cancer, please visit this site http://www.missamerica4kids.org/m.aspx?i=13487+D1463A2BE81&e=6C8FE72B3B. She needs everyone's help with a goal of $100.00. You will be supporting her and helping a child with cancer!
Within my family, my sister, Shawn Verner, was baptized in Christ! She was super excited and I was happy for her to know she is saved and feels the holy spirit within her. It inspired me! I love her for that! I can't wait to see all of my family this weekend to talk and hang out and hopefully see a movie!
Overall, my life is going well. It's the first time I have been 3-0 and have started off the season with three interceptions in the first three games. I can truly say that this season had been a blessed one so far and I can't wait to go and play with my team again! I hope all is well in the Bruin Nation and for everyone to grab their seat belts and enjoy the ride that we are taking to the top of the Pac-10 mountain.
