Women's Golf Finishes Tied for Fifth at Inland Cup

Sept. 23, 2009

PULLMAN, Wash. - Cara Freeman finished in a tie for second place, shooting a 3-under-par 69 in the final round of the Washington State University Inland Cup on Wednesday. The Oregon State women's golf team finished tied for fifth place at the second annual tournament held at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club, a par-72, 6,126-yard course.

'Cara played well today,' head coach Rise Lakowske said. 'She had two bogeys but was still 2-under on the back side today. Yesterday was a real problem for Cara, and the rest of the team too, so it was great to see her come back today with a nice round.'

Freeman's second place finish came after round of 74, 77 and 69 en route to a tournament total 220, just one shot behind tournament champion Kayla Mortellaro of Idaho. Freeman tallied six birdies on the day and led the field with 14 during the tournament. One of those birdies came on the 7th hole when she buried an 80-foot putt.

The Beavers shot rounds of 309, 318 and a final round score of 306 for a tournament total 933. Idaho, which won the tournament, shot 903 in the three day event.

'We played better today. We have some ideas for improvement and we'll get right to it tomorrow,' Lakowske said. 'We hit the ball well, but didn't putt very well. The greens were similar to those at Trysting Tree, so we need to get that straightened out before the Giustina next week.'

Whitney French shot a 234 for the tournament including a final round 74 to finish 19th. French's highlight of the day came on the 10th hole when her shot flew in from 80 yards for the eagle.

Other OSU scores included Lauren Archer shooting 238 and finishing tied for 25th, Brittany Stewart tied for 42nd with a 243 and Elyse Okada was 55th with a 249.

Oregon State will be back in action Sept. 28-29 for the third annual Giustina Memorial Classic on the Beavers' home course, Trysting Tree.
