Women's Volleyball Blog: Hannah Benjamin
Sept. 23, 2009
This season different members of the 2009 Cardinal Women's Volleyball team will send in their thoughts on the season and how the team is progressing. Check back soon for a new update!
During preseason, the campus was very quiet. Other than the occasional sightings of fellow athletes, Stanford was mainly about practice, Jimmy V's Café and ice baths for us freshmen. September 15th changed the game....Move-In Day. After about five weeks of spending quality time within the walls of Maples, we were extremely excited for new faces and the beginning of a very memorable freshmen year.
NSO, or New Student Orientation week, is a week filled with non-stop activities for the new freshmen. For me, it started off with meeting my roommate, a highly anticipated event. Move-In started at 9 a.m., but as the clocked continued ticking and dorm mates continued flowing in, I was becoming anxious to meet my roommate. As I waited, I organized, rearranged, reorganized and tidied the room in hopes of impressing my roommate with a clean and organized side of the room. 10:30 and she finally arrived! Adina, from Houston, Texas. We didn't have practice until noon, so I had plenty of time to help her move-in, meet her parents, and only begin to get to know her. Although volleyball has limited the amount of time I have been able to spend with her, we have already started off with a great friendship and have filled our refrigerator with delicious snacks to share!
NSO has provided endless stories to share. Our first night in our dorms consisted of activities and games that allowed everyone to introduce themselves and get to know the dorm staff; then came the fun. Dorm cheers. Every dorm on campus has a theme that is created by the dorm staff. Before everyone arrives, they decorate the dorms according to the theme and develop dorm cheers. The goal of every dorm is to be the most spirited....ARRoyo (PIRATE theme) takes the prize. Here are some of the cheers that we spent hours memorizing and rehearsing for the loud week to come:
'YO, YO, ARROYO...YO, YO, ARROYO...YO, YO, YO, ARROYO....AAAAHHHH-ROYO!'
'Row, Row, Row your boat, home back to your mom, tell her you're mad, you're dorm's so sad, ARROYO is DA BOMB!'
'We will, we will, ARRRR you, we will, we will, ARRRR you!'
Needless to say, we beat every Wilbur dorm in the Cheer-Off.
The Cardinal Spirit Rally was Thursday night before our first home game! On the steps of the Memorial Auditorium, Coach Dunning along with the men's and women's basketball coaches, excited the Class of 2013 for the upcoming athletic seasons. To rally our class to our first home game, Hayley, Karissa, Charlotte and I threw 50 women's volleyball T-shirts to the crowd!
Our rally sure paid off as 2,635 people attended our first home game! We had already played in several games in front of big, wild crowds, including Hawaii's 7,800 person crowd, but as a freshman, I had no idea what it was going to be like to play in front of classmates and fans who were all cheering for us! Adrenaline rushed through my veins as we ran onto the court, the band blaring, the fans screaming and with my teammates all around me. We defeated San Francisco in four after a driven comeback at the end of the fourth set. Our night concluded with the traditional dance with the band and ice baths to prepare for the next day's match. Saturday afternoon we played Saint Mary's and won after SMC was only able to take one set.
The excitement continued as our first day of classes started Monday! Let's just say that chemistry will be a bit of a challenge for a freshman athlete, but I can't wait for Tuesday which will bring more classes, more friends and more of the amazing Stanford experience!
After a very fun and busy week, we have a lot to do to prepare for our match at Cal. This is a big game, so we hope to see many of you there!
