Aronsson Honored As Vermont Female Athlete of the Month
Sept. 24, 2009
The Vermont Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association has named Washington golfer Molly Aronsson of Shelburne, Vt., as the state's top Female Athlete of the Month for August.
Aronsson won the VSSA honor on the heels of winning the Vermont Women's Amateur at the Burlington Country Club in late August. The former four-sport standout at Rice Memorial High, shot a final round 68 to win.
Aronsson, a senior for the Huskies, led from start to finish and carded a three round total of 211, good enough for a 12 stroke victory. It was her third Vermont State Amateur win in four years (and was runner-up in 2008). The three-day total broke the tournament record and bested more than 80 of the state's top golfers. The final round of 68 by Aronsson ties the record set in 1992 at the Manchester Country Club.
Earlier in the month Aronsson reached match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur in St. Louis. She shot her second straight 4-over 75 on Aug. 4 to finish in an 11-way tie for 53rd, good enough for one of the 64 spots for match play from among the initial field of 156 players. She followed up by taking her initial match play on the first day with a 1-up score over No. 9 seed Ha Na Jang of Korea. The 56th-seeded Aronsson was eliminated on the second day with a 4-3 decision to 41st seed Candace Schepperle of Birmingham, Ala. on Aug. 6.
