Men's Golf Hits The Northwest For Ping/Golfweek Invitational

Sept. 24, 2009

The second-ranked Sun Devils look to build on their recent success at Olympia Fields at the Ping/Golfweek Invitational Sept. 27-28. The two-day, 54-hole event begins Sunday at the 7,152-yard, par-72 Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Complex in Bremerton, Wash. The tournament, hosted by the University of Washington, will begin with 36 holes on Sunday followed by the third and final round on Monday.

Four members of this weekend's line-up helped ASU place first in the Olympia Fields Invitational Sept. 18-20. Senior Tristan Bierenbroodspot and junior Scott Pinckney each finished in the top-10 individually, while junior Jesper Kennegard tied for 19th and senior Knut Borsheim took 24th. Senior Braxton Marquez, the fifth and final member, is making his first appearance of the season.

Six other teams ranked in Golfweek's top-25 will join ASU in Bremerton, including No. 2 Oklahoma State, runner-up to the Sun Devils in last week's Olympia Fields Invitational, and No. 4 Chattanooga.

ASU last won the Ping Preview in 1995-96, the same season they were crowned NCAA champions. They shot a combined 867 and beat runner-up UNLV by seven strokes at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Cornelius, Ore. Freshman Darren Angel took home the individual title with a 209.
