Preseason Honors for Thompson

Sept. 24, 2009

PULLMAN, Wash.--Two national college basketball preview publications have tabbed Washington State University sophomore Klay Thompson (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) as a favorite to garner All-Pacific-10 Conference honors this week.

The Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook named Thompson to the five-man all-conference team. Thompson and fellow sophomore Isaiah Thomas of Washington are the only underclassmen on the squad. Three seniors round out the other five spots; Jerome Randle and Patrick Christopher of California and Nic Wise of Arizona.

Lindy's magazine selected Thompson, a 6-6 guard, to the all-conference first team as well. The publication named the same five players to their top squad.

Thompson returns for his second season after making his mark on the WSU record books as a freshman on his way to earning Pacific-10 Conference All-Freshman Team honors. He set freshman records with starts (33), minutes played (1,092), 3-point field goals (68) and 3-point field goal attempts (165). Thompson shot better than 41 percent from behind the arc last season to lead the Cougars. His 12.5 points per game were third-best on the team, and his 414 points scored is the second-most by a Cougar freshman.

His first year on the college basketball circuit was so good it earned him a spot on the United States U19 National Team. Thompson and fellow Cougar DeAngelo Casto teamed up with some of the country's best young talent to win the gold medal at the U19 World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand. Thompson averaged 7.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and two assists per game as Team USA went 9-0 in the tournament. He scored 10 points in the championship game, an 88-80 victory against Greece.
