Sept. 24, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Riding a seven-game winning streak, the No. 22 Oregon State women's soccer team returns to action this week as the Beavers travel to Portland, Ore., to take on No. 4 Portland on Friday, Sept. 25, at 7:00 p.m.
'It's a great opportunity to go up and play against an in-state rival and one of the best teams in the country,' head coach Linus Rhode said. 'Portland is an extremely talented squad, but I think we are heading into the match with the right mindset.'
The Beavers enter the match winners of seven straight after Oregon State knocked off Dartmouth and Denver last week at the Oregon State Nike Invitational. The defense surrendered only one goal on the weekend while seven different players registered points in a balanced attack.
Heading into the match against the nationally-ranked Pilots, the Oregon State defense leads the Pac-10 Conference with a 0.62 goals against average, surrendering only five goals in eight games. Colleen Boyd and Ashley Wood have split time in net as Boyd enters the weekend with a 0.60 goals against average while Wood has allowed 0.67 goals per match.
On the offensive side of the ball, Chelsea Buckland leads the Beavers offense with four goals and nine points. Sophomore Ashley Seal has posted three game-winning goals for Oregon State while junior defender Courtney Wetzel leads the team with three assists.
No. 4 Portland enters with a mark of 8-1-0 as the Pilots fell to No. 13 Texas A&M, 3-1, last week before defeating SMU, 6-0. The Pilots have out-scored opponents, 20-2, as Sophie Schmidt leads three players with 19 points while Kelsey Davis and Hailee DeYoung have combined in goal to hold opponents to 0.56 goals per game.
Portland leads the all-time series, 26-1-0, and has won 11 straight in between the two schools. Oregon State captured its only victory in the series with a 3-2 win during the 1994 season.
Following the match with the Pilots, Oregon State returns to action on Friday, Oct. 2, when the Beavers travel to San Diego, Calif., to face San Diego State at 4:00 p.m.
