Golf Teams Set to Host Giustina Memorial Classic
Sept. 25, 2009
CORVALLIS - The Oregon State men's and women's golf teams host the third annual Giustina Memorial Classic at OSU's Trysting Tree Golf Club Sept. 28-29. The tournament begins Monday with a shotgun start with tee times set for 8:45 a.m.
'It will be nice to get back on our home course,' women's golf head coach Risë Lakowske said. 'Our defense is the greens. It should be our advantage knowing the greens well and the hole locations should also be an advantage.'
The tournament will be 36 continuous holes played Monday and leaders will start last on Tuesday for the final 18. Tee times for Tuesday is set for 7:45-9:45 a.m. on holes one and 10. At the conclusion of the Classic there will be a brief presentation of awards held for individual men's and women's medalists, as well as a combined award.
The memorial tournament is to honor the life of Natale B. 'Nat' Giustina, who played a fundamental role in the creation of Trysting Tree Golf Club. The Oregon State alumnus was a prominent figure in the OSU community, serving on the OSU Alumni Association board and the Board of Intercollegiate Athletics.
When the tournament was started in 2007, OSU head coaches Brian Watts and Risë Lakowske designed a unique format for the tournament in Nat's honor. The tournament pairs the men's and women's teams from each school in a combined competition against the other participating schools. Teams will play in foursomes (two men, two women).
'This is a great way for our men to start the year,' men's golf head coach Brian Watts said. 'The format alone makes things more relaxed. We're on our home course and everyone is playing with someone familiar from their school.'
Teams scheduled to play in Oregon State's only home tournament of the year include: Boise State, Cal Poly, Hawai'i, Nevada, Oregon, Oregon State, Portland, South Carolina-Upstate, Washington State and Wyoming.
Admission to the 2009 Giustina Memorial Classic is free.
The Giustina Memorial Classic marks the first point opportunities in the 2009-10 Civil War Series between Oregon State and the University of Oregon.
This week's tournament marks the season opener for the men's team while the women's golfers played earlier this week at the Washington State Inland Cup where they finished tied for fifth.
