Led by sophomore Jennifer Song's collegiate best 6-under 66 as well as 2-under performances from senior Caroline Kim and Inah Park, the No. 2 USC women's golf team tied the program's record for best team round (278) in the season-opener at the 2009 Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club North Course in Franklin, Tenn., on Friday (Sept. 25).

USC, under 14th-year coach Andrea Gaston, is tied for first with Auburn at 10-under 278, two strokes ahead of Alabama and Arizona State, who are tied for third. Duke is fifth (283) and UCLA is sixth (284).

The Trojans' tied the team mark set last season in the final round of the Pac-10 Championships.

Song, the 2009 NCAA Freshman of the Year who had a huge summer that included wins at the 2009 U.S. Amateur and U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links champion, continued her strong play with a 6-under 66. The effort bested her previous low round as a Trojan, a 67 at the 2009 NCAA Regional Championships.

Playing on a rain-soaked course, Song birdied three of her first four holes, was 4-under after nine holes and birdied the 11th and 12th holes to secure a 6-under performance. She is tied for first with Auburn's Candace Schepperle.

Kim and Park are tied for 15th with their 2-under 70s. The mark was one off Kim's best round as a Trojan and was a USC best for Park. Kim was 1-under on both the front and back 9s (including a birdie on 18) while Park was 2-under on the front 9 and even on the back 9.

Freshman Cyna Rodriguez, in her Trojan debut, tied for 36th at par 72 while junior Lizette Salas tied for 57th at 2-over 74.

The Trojans are playing this event without senior All-American Belen Mozo, who is still recovering from off-season shoulder surgery.

'It was great to get out there again,' Gaston said. 'I felt like everyone played pretty solid. The course is really wet but the girls hit a lot of good shots, made some putts and played solid all around. It was a good start.'

Action will continue at 8 a.m. CST on Saturday and at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday.
