Volleyball Falls to Washington State in Pac-10 Opener
Sept. 25, 2009
Corvallis, Ore. – Senior Rachel Rourke (Queensland, Australia) racked up 14 kills, but the Oregon State volleyball team fell to Washington State in three on Friday evening in the both teams’ Pac-10 opener.
Set scores were 25-19, 25-23, 25-16.
“A lot of it was attitude, and we were not there to dig balls, pursue balls and put balls away,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “We need to be aggressive when were playing and we missed a couple serves at the beginning in the first set. We just need to have a better play at the ball from our defensive players and a better player at the net for our hitters. We struggled in all phases of the game.”
Rourke terminated half of her kills in the first set. Junior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) was also hot in the first set, tallying six of her eight total.
Defensively, sophomore Betsy Devich (Kirkland, Wash.) dug 13 balls, while Rourke, senior Lexie Rathgeber (White Rock, British Columbia) and junior Kiersten Sambrailo (Watsonville, Calif.) all had four blocks each.
Washington State’s Jackie Albright led all hitters with 18 kills, while Kelly Hyder posted a match-high 18 digs.
