Women's Soccer Sees Winning Streak Snapped by No. 4 Portland
Sept. 25, 2009
PORTLAND, Ore. - The No. 22 Oregon State women's soccer team challenged No. 4 Portland on its own home field; however, the Pilots captured a 1-0 victory over the Beavers in front of 4,238 fans at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex on Friday night. The loss snaps Oregon State's seven-game winning streak as the Beavers fell to 8-2-0 on the season while Portland improved to 9-1-0.
After a scoreless first half, Charney Burk registered the only goal of the match in the 55th minute. On passes from Michelle Enyeart and Kendra Chandhoke, Burk connected on a shot from the top of the box into the lower left-hand corner of the net to give the Pilots the lead.
Oregon State would not be able to find the equalizer in remaining time as the Pilots snapped the second-longest winning streak in school history.
The Beavers had a pair of chances to grab the lead early in the second half; but, Red Nixon and Rachael Axon saw their shots turned back by Kelsey Davis as the Pilots goalie eventually picked up the shutout victory.
Oregon State, which leads the Pac-10 Conference in goals against average, held Portland to its lowest goal total of the season as the Pilots have scored at least two goals in every win this season. The Pilots registered one goal in its only loss of the year (3-1 to No. 13 Texas A&M).
Colleen Boyd made six stops in goal for the Beavers while Kelsey Davis made four stops in net for the Pilots.
Oregon State returns to action on Friday, Oct. 2, when the Beavers travel to San Diego, Calif., to face San Diego State at 4:00 p.m.
