Men's Tennis Wraps Pepperdine Invite

Sept. 28, 2009

MALIBU, Calif. – The Arizona men’s tennis team competed this weekend at the
Pepperdine Wave Invitational in Malibu, Calif. in a loaded field which included host Pepperdine, Fresno State and Minnesota.

In competition for Arizona were Ravid Hazi, Jay Goldman, Pat Metham, Alex Johnson, Frank Chen, Andres Arango, Andres Carrasco and Geoff Embry.

The Wildcats were downed in all their Friday doubles matches against Pepperdine opponents.  Metham and Embry were defeated by Beidas and Clarke.  Hazi and Carrasco lost to Tearney and Llompart, 8-4;  Goldman and freshman Johnson were defeated by closely by Moreno and Kepla, 9-8; and Zafiros and Chen were defeated by Turner and Moss,
9-7.

In singles play on Friday, the Cats competed against Fresno State players. Goldman,
Hazi, and Embry won their singles matches for the day. Goldman defeated Zapletal of Fresno State, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6, while Hazi defeated Ayoun
6-2, 6-4, and Embry defeated Alapati, 6-7, 7-5.

The team performed a complete “180” on Saturday, claiming all their doubles matches but failed to win any singles.  Embry and Metham defeated Wernet and Gallego, 8-6, and Goldman and Zafiros defeated Ruddock and Arndt, 8-2, of Minnesota.

The Cats were unable to win any doubles matches against Fresno State on the final day of the invitational.  Unlike
Friday, Arizona couldn’t rebound and dropped its singles matches against eight Minnesota players.

“As always, I am proud of the effort that the guys put forth this weekend,” said
head coach Tad Berkowitz. “However, there are definitely some things we need to work on at practice to get us ready for the next event.”

Next up for the Cats is the ITA Men’s All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. on Friday, Oct. 2nd- Oct. 11th.
