Sanders Wins Giustina Memorial

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Trent Sanders posted a 71 (-1) in the final round Tuesday, to win the Giustina Memorial Classic, held at the par-72, 7,030-yard Trysting Tree Golf Club.
Sanders' three-round total of 207 (-9) was good enough to edge out runner-up John Paton of Oregon by one stroke. The finish marked the sophomore's first collegiate victory and the lowest 54-hole total of his career, knocking four strokes off his previous record.
'I am very proud of Trent for holding up on in the rain today; he is becoming a fine player,' said head coach Walt Williams.
Sanders is the second Cougar to notch an individual win in the three tournaments WSU has competed in this year, Kevin Tucker took home the first place trophy at the Palouse Pollegiate in Pullman.
Austin Hurt finished second for the Cougars with a three-under par, 213. The tournament marks Hurt's seventh-career top-10 finish, and his 17th-career top 25 finish. The two career totals rank seventh and eighth respectively on WSU's all-time list.
Tucker earned his third consecutive top-25 finish (19) by finishing in a tie for 11th, putting him in a three-way tie for fifth on the career top-25 list. The senior carded a final round of 71 to give him a total of 214 (-2).
Nick Ellis was the fourth Cougar to earn a top-25 finish at the event (T-24), his first of the season. The junior out of Wenatchee, Wash., tallied a three-round total of 222, tying his lowest score this season.
Freshman Hank Frame rounded out the Cougar lineup finishing in 30th place.
The Cougars finished second on the team leaderboard, nine strokes behind host school Oregon State, but finishing four strokes ahead of Pacific-10 foe, Oregon.
The WSU team now has over a week to prepare for its next tournament, the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. The two-day tournament will be held and Fairfax, Calif., and will begin Monday, Oct. 12.
