USC'S Olsen Named Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Sept. 29, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.- For the second-straight week, USC’s senior goalkeeper Kristin Olsen has been named Pac-10 Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 22-28, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Olsen came up big for the Trojans again this weekend, earning two wins in goal, beginning with a 3-2 victory over Pacific. Olsen, who hails from Orange, Calif., made four saves and held off the Tigers to get the decision for USC.
On Sunday, in arguably the biggest game of the season so far for USC, a match-up with No. 9 Santa Clara on the road, the Trojans took a 1-0 lead early in the second half, and then with the help of Olsen, were able to keep the Broncos scoreless, weathering an onslaught of shots from Santa Clara. Olsen made six saves in the second half alone, and the Trojans were able to net one more goal to secure the 2-0 win.
The win marks the senior’s 23rd career solo shutout and gives USC its fourth straight road victory and sixth straight win overall. Olsen added 12 saves over the weekend to her Pac-10 leading average (4.33 saves per game) and now holds three shutouts on the year. USC and Olsen were riding high coming into the weekend, after two shutouts on the road against ranked opponents last week, which earned Olsen Pac-10 Player of the Week honors.
Olsen becomes only the third Pac-10 women’s soccer player to ever win back-to-back player of the week honors. The last to do it was Iris Mora of UCLA in 2003. Another Trojan, Ali Fennell, received the honor for two straight weeks back in 1999.
This week’s honor is Olsen’s fourth Player of the Week selection, which ties her in the record books for the most Pac-10 Women’s Soccer Player of the Week nods with Nicole Garbin of Oregon. It also marks USC’s 21st Player of the Week honor overall.
