Stanford Softball Unveils 2010 Schedule

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford head softball coach John Rittman has announced the schedule for the upcoming 2010 season. The Cardinal posted a 48-11 overall record in 2009, marking the best winning percentage in school history (.814), and once again finished among the top-10 in the major collegiate softball polls.
Stanford, which advanced to its fourth NCAA Super Regional in five years, will take on some of the nation's best competition this spring. The Cardinal will play 29 games against teams that participated in last year's NCAA Tournament, including three conference games versus reigning NCAA Champion Washington and a showdown with national runner-up Florida in early March. Stanford will also play 20 games against teams that finished last season ranked in the top-25.
The Cardinal will prepare for the 2010 campaign with five exhibition games this fall. During homecoming weekend, Stanford will face Saint Mary's on Friday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m., followed the next day by its Alumni game at Noon. The team will take on San Jose State on Oct. 29 and conclude the fall season with a double-header against Cal State East Bay on Nov. 8. All games will be played at the Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium.
Stanford opens the 2010 season at the Paradise Softball Classic in Honolulu, Hawai'i against Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Feb. 11. The Cardinal will also face McNeese State and Hawai'i during the opening weekend.
The team will return home to host the Stanford Nike Invitational, Feb. 19-21. Stanford will take on 2009 NCAA Tournament participants Illinois, Nevada and Fresno State, as well as, UC Riverside and Sacramento State during its first home weekend.
The Cardinal will hit the road again, playing at the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., and at the DeMarini Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. Nine of the 11 games played in the two tournaments will be against teams that competed in the 2009 NCAA Championship, including Tennessee, Northwestern, Florida and North Carolina.
Stanford will host two more tournaments, the Stanford Louisville Slugger Classic (Mar. 19-21) and the Stanford Invitational (Mar. 26-28), before jumping into the ultra-competitive Pac-10 schedule. Among the challengers are two teams coming off NCAA appearances, Cal Poly and BYU.
The squad will open the conference season at home against Bay Area rival California, at Smith Family Stadium Apr. 1-3. The Cardinal will continue Pac-10 play on the road as they travel to Corvallis, Ore., to take on the Oregon State Beavers Apr. 9-11 and to Tucson, Ariz., Apr. 16-18, to face 2009 Women's College World Series participant Arizona.
Stanford will return to The Farm to host the UCLA Bruins, Apr. 23-25 and the Arizona State Sun Devils, also a 2009 WCWS participant, Apr. 30 - May 2. The Cardinal will then travel to Seattle for three games against the defending National Champion Washington Huskies, May 7-9. The team will close the conference season at home versus the Oregon Ducks, May 13-15.
NCAA Regional action will begin May 21, and leads up to the 29th annual Women's College World Series, June 3-9 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
The 2009 season marked the 11th 40-win season in school history for Stanford. The team competed in its 12th straight NCAA Tournament, hosted Arizona in the Stanford Super Regional and finished fourth in the competitive Pac-10 Conference.
