California Golden Bear Women's Gymnastics Begins Practicing

Oct. 1, 2009

BERKELEY -

The California Golden Bear women's gymnastics team officially started practice the week of Sept. 21. Fifteen gymnasts are working out at the Golden Bear Rec Center, preparing for the 2010 season.

All-Pac-10 honoree Sophia Hocini is the veteran of the squad. Hocini, the lone senior, returns for her fourth season of competition as a Bear. Hocini has competed each of her first three seasons at the NCAA Regionals.

Juniors Stefanie Cheng and Avery Gee also bring experience to the gym. Gee qualified for Regionals last season, competing in the floor exercise. Cheng was a first team All-Academic Pac-10 member last season.

Sophomores Erica Varon and Shana Johnson had solid freshman seasons, stepping up to help fill in the gaps on last year's small squad. Sophomores Alexandra Leggitt and Leah Redon also return from last year's roster.

The Bears large freshman class, seven newcomers, will definitely make an impact this season. Head coach Cari DuBois took a few moments during practice to share her thoughts on the freshmen, her returners, and the excitement that is Cal Gymnastics.
