Oct. 1, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's soccer team closes out its non-conference portion of the schedule this weekend as the Beavers travel to San Diego, Calif., for the Aztec Classic. Oregon State opens play at the tournament on Friday, Oct. 2, at 4:00 p.m.
The Beavers, who are receiving votes in the NSCAA top 25 poll, enter the contest with a mark of 7-2-0 after Oregon State fell to No. 4 Portland, 1-0, in its only match last week.
Prior to the loss to nationally-ranked Portland, Oregon State had won seven straight, the second longest streak in school history. Defense carried the Beavers during the streak as Oregon State currently ranks second in the Pac-10 Conference with a 0.67 goals against average. Colleen Boyd and Ashley Wood have split time in goal as both keepers enter the weekend with a 0.67 goals against average.
Chelsea Buckland leads a balanced offensive attack as the freshman has posted four goals and nine points this season. Ashley Seal ranks second on the squad with seven points while Courtney Wetzel leads the team with three assists.
San Diego State, the host for the tournament, enters the weekend with a 6-3-2 record after a 2-1 overtime victory over UC Irvine last weekend. The Aztecs are led by Cat Walker (four goals, 10 points) while Aubree Southwick has posted a 1.22 goals against average in between the pipes.
Oregon State leads the all-time series with the Aztecs, 6-1-0, as the Beavers defeated San Diego State, 1-0, on Aug. 27, 2004, in the last meeting between the two schools.
In the opener of the Aztec Classic, Seattle (5-6-1) takes on UNLV (3-3-4) at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Oregon State will conclude action at the tournament on Sunday, Oct. 4, when the Beavers face UNLV at 11:30 a.m. GameTracker (live stats) will be available for both games at www.osubeavers.com.
