Gator Bowl Team to Lead 'The Walk'
Oct. 2, 2009
STANFORD, Calif.-- The annual game day tradition of “The Walk”, which each week this season honors a special group of former football players, will this week include mid-1980s players, All-American running back Brad Muster, the school's second leading rusher all-time, Fred Stahl, Steve Weber, John Mahoney and Bruce Lang. All were members of the Gator Bowl team in 1986.
“The Walk” will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Arrillaga Family Sports Center.
All the players were part of the teams from the mid to late 1980s, which included a Gator Bowl appearance in 1986, the team's first appearance in the post-season in eight years. That 1986 team coached by Jack Elway, father to NFL great, John, went 8-4, beating No. 12-ranked UCLA 28-23 on November 8, as well as No. 12-ranked Arizona to close out the season, 29-24. They lost to Clemson 27-21.
In 1986 John Payne threw for 2261 yards and Muster rushed for a team-high 1053 yards and caught another team-best 565 yards. He was just the second running back in school-history to surpass 1000 yards in a season. Muster, a first round selection of the Bears in 1988, rushed for 2940 yards in his career.
Saturday's Stanford-UCLA game will kick off at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are still available at the Stanford Athletic Ticket Office, on-line at GoStanford.com or by calling 1-800-Stanford. The game will be televised by ABC and is a part of ESPN's game day package for out of market fans.
